UNEP - Program OSN pro životní prostředí podporuje založení národních komitétů ve svých členských zemích s cílem zvýšit zájem o problematiku životního prostředí jak na úrovni globální, tak regionální nebo národní a s cílem informovat o činnosti a mandátu UNEP.
Řídící rada UNEP rozhodla o ustavení národních komitétů na svém 13. zasedání v roce 1985 a následně se k otázce národních komitétů vyjádřila i v dalších letech (UNEP/GC.13/33 paragraph 2(f) from 1985, 15/1 paragraph III, and 15/42 paragraph 6) a počítá s jejich pomocí v rámci zapojení občanské společnosti do činnosti UNEP.
